Overview
Project Overview
SmartBG Remover is a self-serve SaaS product for teams that publish product photography at volume. Users drop in a batch of images, the model isolates the subject, and clean cut-outs come back in seconds — in the browser or through a developer API. We designed and built the product end to end: the editing interface, the inference pipeline, subscription billing and the API surface teams integrate with.

Challenge
The problem worth solving.
Before the build, SmartBG Remover had to answer a set of hard questions about saas & ai tools. These are the constraints that shaped every decision that followed.
- 01User problem
Quality at speed
Cut-outs had to look hand-masked around hair and soft edges, while still returning fast enough to feel instant in a browser.
Affects — AI Solutions
- 02Business problem
Volume, not single files
The target users process hundreds of product photos a week, so a one-image-at-a-time flow was never going to be enough.
Affects — SaaS Development
- 03Technical constraint
Predictable cost
Inference is the expensive part of the product. Usage had to be metered and tied to plans without confusing the customer.
Affects — Web Development
- 04Product constraint
Two audiences, one product
Marketers wanted a simple visual tool. Developers wanted an API. Both had to sit on the same core service.
Affects — AI Solutions
The solution
From problem to product.
We approached SmartBG Remover as a subscription saas product — deciding the structure, the interface system and the technical foundation in that order, then building them together.
- 01Product direction
Queued inference pipeline
A Python service handles segmentation behind a job queue, so batches process in parallel and the interface can stream results back as each image finishes.

- 02UX system
Editor-first interface
A Next.js front end with drag-and-drop upload, a before/after comparison and per-image refinement, built so a non-technical user never sees the machinery.

- 03Technical foundation
Metered subscriptions
Credits and plan limits are enforced server-side and surfaced in a usage dashboard, so customers always know where they stand before renewal.

- 04Delivery
Documented public API
The same pipeline is exposed as a keyed REST API with rate limiting, so developer customers can wire background removal into their own tooling.

Features
Built around the work that matters.
The feature set is deliberately narrow: the work saas & ai tools teams do every day, done properly.

Process
How the project came together.
Six phases, from first conversation to launch. Each one produced something the SmartBG Remover team could review, not just a status update.
- 01 — Phase
Discovery
Mapped the two user groups — content teams and developers — and agreed what a single product had to serve for both.
Deliverables
- Stakeholder interviews
- Scope definition
- Success criteria
Key decision — What has to be true for this product to work.
- 02 — Phase
Planning
Defined the pipeline architecture, plan structure and metering model before any interface work started.
Deliverables
- Data model
- Architecture outline
- Delivery roadmap
Key decision — The shape of the system before any screen is drawn.
- 03 — Phase
UX / UI
Designed the upload-to-export flow first, then the dashboard and billing screens around it.
Deliverables
- Core flows
- Interface design
- Design system tokens
Key decision — Which screen carries the product and gets designed first.
- 04 — Phase
Development
Built the Next.js front end and the Python inference service in parallel behind a shared job contract.
Deliverables
- Front end build
- API and services
- Integrations
Key decision — What ships in the first release and what waits.
- 05 — Phase
Testing
Tested edge quality against difficult source images and load-tested batch throughput.
Deliverables
- Functional QA
- Performance checks
- Accessibility pass
Key decision — The quality bar the release has to clear.
- 06 — Phase
Launch
Shipped with API documentation, monitoring and usage alerts in place.
Deliverables
- Deployment
- Monitoring
- Handover and training
Key decision — How the product is supported after go-live.
